A new type of reclosable packaging is helping Italy's packaging suppliers get a bigger market cake, especially the Italian local cheese maker market with a growth rate of 30%.

MasterPack, a packaging processor based in Montvalle, Italy, knows that Italians, like consumers in the United States, are constantly looking for a quicker way to prepare a good-tasting diet, so they have the technology with Zip-Pak () and Hudson-Sharp (). The coalition has developed an attractive upright edge-folding bag for Grana Padano Crushed Cheese.

The grated cheese of Grana Padano is similar to its close relative, the more famous Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, and is an Italian traditional food with a history of thousands of years. The Catholic Cistercian monks first discovered a method of making granulated hard cheese (its name Grana means "grain"). Today, Grana Padano cheese, whether sliced or crushed, is very popular in all parts of Italy and other countries in the world.

Innoflex's Inno-Lok process is used to manufacture and install the zipper structure in the production process of the new bag. The bag's body is easy to produce and easy to use. The press-fit zipper with a barrier structure is made by Zip- Pak friendship provided.

The zipper closure was invented as early as 1954. It was mainly used in stationery bags, but in the past ten years, this kind of zipper has had a significant impact on the packaging industry.

Hudson-Sharp provided the equipment MasterPack needed to zip the side of the bag material. The packaging materials processed by MasterPack can be shipped directly to the cheese processing plant where they can be processed into bags. This material was wrapped around a forming tube and the bottom and back were sealed, filled with nitrogen, then filled with vertical forming/filling/sealing equipment, and the top opening was finally sealed.

The Zip-Pak Inno-Lok zipper with insulation properties consists of a low-density polyethylene side edge and a layer of vinyl alcohol (EVOH) that separates moisture and oxygen. The film around the zipper is marked with a hole to make the bag easy to open. Zip-Pak said that the EVOH layer can maintain its isolation characteristics. The MasterPack claims that despite the influence of the bag material and other factors, the shelf life of the bagged crushed cheese is six months longer than that of a normal packaged cheese.

Maria Ippolito, MasterPack's export manager, said that this new type of packaging has received a positive response from consumers. She said: “This new packaging option is very much in line with consumer tastes for products that require easy access and storage. It also provides isolation protection, which is very important for the long-term preservation of cheese. We believe that this new packaging will definitely help the broken cheese brand achieve better performance."

Previously, consumers needed to open the wrapper of the wedge cheese, cut the cheese into pieces by hand, and store them in another container. Nowadays, purchasing soft upright packaging and pre-chopping Grana Padano is a simpler choice for consumers. Pre-chopped cheese has been on the market for several years, but discerning consumers often criticize that their texture is inferior to those larger blocks that need to buy home and then chopped cheese. Ippolito believes that this is mainly due to packaging, and some customers have expressed that they are unable to meet the demand for food taste and aroma preservation.

MasterPack decided to provide an upright package that will keep the freshness and taste of cheese optimal. This re-sealable pouch is sealed by an upright device. With a separate zipper and a convenient open-bag piece, it can be opened and closed many times. Unused cheese can be kept fresh by putting it back into the refrigerator. The MasterPack's new results gave the company cheese industry customers a practical new option.

MasterPack said that during the development of the new bag material, the company inspected several options for zippers, but quickly decided to add Zip-Pak's Inno-Lok isolation re-sealing function to its own packaging film material. The MasterPack uses Hudson-Sharp's existing equipment and attaches the zipper to the opposite sides of the package. Hudson-Sharp offers a range of Inno-Lok zipper packaging machines that can be used with existing forming/filling/sealing equipment to produce Inno-Lok pre-assembled zip films. The use of this technology does not require hardware upgrades or modifications.

Ippolito explained: “Isolating oxygen can prevent food from decaying. Barrier property is very important to keep food fresh and delicious, so we chose Zip-Pak's Inno-Lok barrier zipper, which works in conjunction with elastic barrier packaging. Effectively maintaining the freshness of the contents, Ippolito said that for those products that are strictly required to insulate moisture and oxygen, barrier zipper technology enables their packaging to effectively extend the shelf life."

Ippolito said: "This program is ideal for packaging oxygen-sensitive products because it does not require large capital investment and does not require sacrificing the speed of the machine or the integrity of the package. Pre-installed zippered film roll When it comes to packaging cheese, its speed is no different from those for pre-installed zippers. This is a clear advantage of the off-line systems (independent systems). We also want those with pre-packed zipper bags in the United States or Prepackaged zipper film coils are being developed by interested packaging companies.”

Ippolito explained that sealed packages with zippers also allow those crushed cheeses to be stored in original containers, with brand names, logos, and packaging information presented to consumers throughout the life of the product.

For Grana Padano cheese packages, Masterpack produced a multi-layer film structure that was shipped from a 95 micron thick polyester/foil/PE web where aniline could be used for eight-color printing. In addition to the 1,000-gram bale size, Masterpack also offers a re-sealable, barrier-type zipper material in a variety of sizes suitable for 100, 200 and 500 gram food packaging.

Ippolito said that the company is particularly eager to implement the re-sealing function when designing new types of packaging. This barrier-type zip extends a little over three inches along the front of the package, making this upright package the main storage container, and it can easily be placed in a food rack.

Masterpack's Masterzip pre-assembled zip film web can be both pasteurized and chemically sterilized. The bag material can be printed on digital plates with flexography and up to 8 colors can be selected.
