According to a daily report, the Japan Metal Materials Research and Development Center (JRCM) has successfully developed a technique for removing fine impurities from molten aluminum scrap.

In the past, impurities in the aluminum melt were removed by depositing a film-like oxide film on the surface of the filter to remove particulate impurities. This is called a surface filtration mechanism. However, this filter allows fine impurities below 20 μm to pass smoothly and cannot be captured. Therefore, 10-20 μm impurities have historically been impossible to remove successfully.

The new technology developed by JRCM this time is to apply an adhesive to the surface of the filter and newly install an internal filtering mechanism to remove fine impurities by the effect of so-called glue. It is possible to completely eliminate the original number of filters and the filtering process so that the same filter has a new filter configuration of the surface filter mechanism and the internal filter mechanism. The impurity concentration after filtration reaches 100 ppm or less, and the filtration cost of 1 ton of aluminum melt is less than 1,000 yen using a plate filter.
