The British Ministry of the Interior has requested the Design Committee to develop a new alternative to traditional products in order to reduce the number of accidents associated with glass products by 87,000 per year. This reform will become part of the Ministry of the Interior's "safeguarding society" drinking group. Each year, the UK government’s losses associated with beer glasses/bottles amount to 100 million pounds (equivalent to US$160 million), including police fees and medical expenses. The British government is looking for ways to reduce this loss.

Alternatives to the reform are in the process of being studied, including polycarbonates, and the final results will be disclosed in December this year.

Alan Campbell, a British Interior Ministry official, said: Innovative design has made an outstanding contribution to crime reduction. In 1997, the innovative design reduced one-third of the total crime rate. At present, this "safeguarding society" project is looking for ways to reduce alcohol-related crimes or losses and believes that this project can achieve the same success.
