One of the best applications of 3D printing technology is repairing, especially for those products that have been around for some years. Because such products are usually discontinued, it is difficult to get spare parts. Even with the original design, if you use traditional manufacturing processes (such as casting), the cost will be very high. But 3D printing does not cause these problems at all, and these parts can be rebuilt quickly and economically. Below, Xiaobian will present you with the latest classic case in this area - to repair the only existing Delage Type-S car.

Type-S is a masterpiece produced by French luxury car manufacturer Delage in 1914 and was once the star of the Grand Prix. The company was founded in 1905 by Louis Delage but closed in 1953. So after that, Type-S completely lost the maintenance guarantee.

Although the owner of the Type-S, Stuart Murdoch, has been taking care of it all the time, it does not stop the erosion of time and the accident. Finally, in 2014, the worst situation occurred - the 100-year-old classic car exploded at the Murdoch engine. Although Murdoch sent it to the repair shop, everyone said that the damage was too serious to be repaired.

Fortunately, Murdoch then found Grant Cowie (the handsome old man in the picture above). The latter is not only a good engineer, but also a pre-war car expert. “I know very well that using traditional methods to make these gears will not only be expensive, but it will probably take many attempts to succeed, which can be very time consuming,” says Cowie. “So, I decided to use the power of modern technology, namely 3D printing. And 3D scanning."

Even before this, no one has ever tried to repair such a complicated classic car in this way, and the drawings of this Delage Type-S can not be found, but Cowie did not shrink back, but bravely accepted the challenge. . After the repair began, he first spent a few days using the laser scanner to fully scan the engine block, and then uploaded the data to the computer, so that the damaged part of the cylinder was clearly seen.

Then, the excellent engineer “digitally repaired” the damage through his skilled CAD technology, and then used a sand-type 3D printer to print the appropriate sand mold. Finally, he took the mold to a local foundry, created a new engine, and post-treated the surface using traditional techniques.

So, can this new cast iron engine work properly? The answer is certainly yes. Murdoch was very excited about this because he was finally able to drive his baby on the road. And it also means that he will never have to worry about it anymore.
