H&M is an internationally renowned clothing chain operator originated in Sweden. Founded in 1947, H&M has opened about 3,000 chain stores worldwide. In order to standardize the entire supply chain operations from suppliers to retail stores, H&M has formulated a strict set of logistics packaging standards.

Globally, more than 700 suppliers working with H&M must strictly implement H&M's logistics packaging standards. Any package that does not meet this standard will be considered as an unqualified operation and will affect the KPI of the store or supplier. The implementation of this set of standards will help H&M to maintain effective management of product transportation in the “Fast Fashion” segment of this particular industry and enable the entire supply chain to operate quickly and orderly.

First, the requirements of the carton

1. The size of the carton regulates the size of the carton, which helps to increase the space utilization in the logistics process such as transportation and warehousing. H&M's standard carton, depending on the length, width and height, is mainly composed of the following 6: 58×40×1000px, 58×35×1000px, 54×40×1000px, 54×35×1000px, 50×40×1000px, 50 ×35×1000px.

H&M generally only allows the use of the above 6 standard size carton boxes. In very special cases, other sizes will be used as a special case, but the largest carton must be smaller than 120×80×750px, and the smallest carton must be larger than 29× 20×500px. The reason for this requirement is that exceeding the upper limit may cause inconvenience in logistics and transportation, and cartons below the lower limit may easily be lost during transportation.

2. H&M corrugated carton standard
H&M generally chooses a single corrugated cardboard box as a shipping container. According to the requirements, the cardboard box must be glued with starch glue to avoid the use of packing nails. Figure 1 shows some of the instructions for a single corrugated carton. H&M requires that all parts of the corrugated paper must meet the following requirements:

First, the outer liner must be high-grade kraft paper. Different standards of kraft paper can be used depending on the purpose of transportation. For the international transport of cartons, the kraft paper unit weight can not be less than 250g; for domestic transport cartons, kraft paper unit weight can not be less than 200g.

The second is that the unit weight of the corrugated layer is 150g, and the general type A or C type can be selected, and the corrugating parameters described in Table 1 must be met.

The above technical requirements for corrugated boxes are based on the actual needs of product packaging, carton handling, product transport, and stacking of empty cartons. Based on the above requirements, cartons can meet the following protection standards:

1 bending strength ≥ 9.0 Nm
2 side pressure strength ≥ 7.0 kN/m
3 Impact strength ≥1500 kPa
4A type corrugated flat compressive strength ≥280 kPa
5C class corrugated flat compressive strength ≥330 kPa
6COBB 60≤28g/m2

Second, the requirements for packing

1. The packing filling rate is to fully protect the products in the carton, and the packing and filling rate must be correct. Excessive overfilling and short loading are unacceptable. The former will cause wrinkling and affect the quality of the product. The latter will cause the carton to be damaged during transportation.

In addition, according to EU-related regulations, H&M, in order to protect the working safety of employees, stipulates that the maximum gross weight of a single carton is 20kg, and the supplier should select a carton with an appropriate size according to the volume/weight ratio of the product.

2. The correct sealing method The correct sealing method can effectively improve the working efficiency of the supplier and the distribution center, and protect the loaded products. H&M uses different sealing solutions for the top and bottom of the carton. Using different sealing solutions can make the carton easy to identify positive and negative in the shipping link, avoiding the difficulty of the operator reading the cassette due to the inverting of the carton, which in turn causes picking operation mistakes.

The bottom sealing method is as follows:

First, close the wider lid and close it without overlapping.

Second, the longer lid is closed and there is no overlap when closed.

Finally, the carton is closed along the seam of two longer lids using a sealing tape.

The top sealing method is as follows:

First, close the longer lid and close with about 250px of overlap.

Second, close the wider lid and close without overlapping.

Finally, the carton is closed along the seams of the two wider lids using a sealing tape.

At the same time, H&M also requires that the cartons must be opened from the top of the cartons, and the overlap of the top lids at the top can effectively prevent damage to the internal products when the cartons are opened.

3. Selection of sealing tapes In the sealing process mentioned above, it can be noted that H&M has very little use of sealing tapes. Therefore, there are stringent requirements for the selection criteria of sealing tapes to ensure that it does not reduce the sealing tapes. The amount of use reduces the quality of the box.

H&M used a 75mm wide, 65μm thick transparent water-based acrylic adhesive tape with an adhesive strength of not less than 3.3N/cm2, a tensile strength of not less than 61.3N/cm2, and an elongation ratio of not less than 165%.

4. The standard cassette of a box is a set of information printed on the outer box of the transport. It generally contains the information of the consignee, consignor, product, transportation, etc., and is mainly used by the operator in the process of cargo transfer. Identification of goods belonging. The H&M standard box contains all the necessary information.

The box should be printed in the center of the smaller side of the carton, and the side where the box is printed should be handled outside, so that the information on the box can be read without having to carry the carton.

Third, the pallet loading requirements

H&M uses the standard European standard tray (120x2000px), and 6 kinds of standard boxes can achieve the ideal tray loading effect and tray utilization rate on the European standard tray. Figure 7 shows the H&M standard box loaded on the tray.

According to different standard box sizes, the tray edges will have different size blank margins. Table 2 shows the tray utilization rates for various standard box sizes. Among them, the pallet utilization rate of the A-type carton is the highest, and the pallet utilization rate of the F-type carton is the lowest. Therefore, H&M encourages suppliers to use A-type cardboard boxes as much as possible to avoid the use of low-load-rate carton types to save transportation costs.

The height of the trays is also limited. Each tray is stacked up to 4 cartons, ie a height of 1.6m (not counting the height of the tray itself). The pallets and trays after loading cannot be stacked.
