The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hong Kong has recently successfully developed a slope monitoring system that can effectively monitor the depth and soil structure of slopes and accurately calculate the materials required for slope maintenance.
Yue Zhongqi, an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at HKU, said that the monitor is equipped with several sensors that can monitor drilling depth, rotation speed and pressure on the slopes, and can output data on the computer. The initial test was based on laser induction and now uses rotary induction. The cost of raw materials for each monitor is no more than 100,000 Hong Kong dollars (7.8 Hong Kong dollars and 1 US dollar).
The slope drill monitor was tested on more than 300 drilled holes in 10 slope sites. The results show that the results are very satisfactory. At present, the instrument has successfully obtained US patents, and Hong Kong and Mainland patents are being applied.
According to statistics, there are at least 50,000 slopes in Hong Kong. At present, soil nailing prevention and control technology is commonly used to consolidate slopes. The engineer first drilled holes on the slope with a drill and then hit the soil nails. A slope may need to drill at least 100 holes and use hundreds of soil nails. In the past, relying mainly on the experience of workers, it was difficult to accurately master and record borehole conditions and soil texture.
