Pigment Dispersion Printing Adaptability Wet Friction Resistance Dry Friction Ink Stability Heat Resistance Water Resistance Coloring Luster From Table 1, we can see that water-soluble acrylic modified resin is used as the binder for water-based inks. It has significant advantages in terms of gloss, weatherability, heat resistance, water resistance, chemical resistance, and stain resistance. It can display excellent performance in direct disperse or synthetic polymer emulsions. The ink made from this resin can reach the quality level of foreign advanced products. The first step in the production process of water-based inks is to grind and prepare color pastes: water-soluble resins, pigments, auxiliaries and solvents (water), etc. are mixed and dispersed by a high-speed disperser, and ground into a backup color paste. At present, whether it is imported water-based ink or domestic water-based ink, there are disadvantages such as non-alkaline, non-anti-ethanol, non-water resistant, slow drying, poor gloss, and easy to cause paper shrinkage. To overcome these shortcomings, some use flexographic UV inks, which not only increase the printing process, but also increase the cost of printing; some use high-priced imports of high-grade water-based ink, which also increases the printing cost. All these have caused China's flexographic printing to be restricted, which has restricted the development of China's packaging and printing industry.
To solve these problems, Wuhan Modern Industrial Technology Research Institute has used its own advantages to organize scientific research personnel to tackle the problem. After more than two years of hard work, it has finally developed a series of high-precision water-based ink products. This series of products are environmentally friendly, non-toxic, non-irritating odor, non-corrosive, non-flammable, non-explosive, good safety features. The product can be directly diluted with tap water or ethanol during use. It does not harm the environment and the human body. The printed product is not only free from harmful residual substances after drying, but also insoluble in water, ethanol and alkaline substances, and can completely replace the high-grade imported water. Ink has played an active role in promoting the domestic production of flexible printing in China.
Research and development of environment-friendly water-based inks Water-based inks are referred to as water inks, and flexographic water-based inks are called liquid inks. They are mainly composed of water-soluble resins, organic pigments, solvents, and related additives.
Water-soluble resins Water-soluble resins or water-dispersible resins are water-based ink binders, which have a great influence on ink viscosity, adhesion, gloss, drying, and printability. Rosin modified maleic acid resin is often used as the connecting material to make ink, but this kind of ink can only be used to print general carton, and it can not meet the requirements of gloss and water resistance required for medium and high-grade packaging printing. The stability of urethane resin and waterborne amino resin is good, but printability and solubility are slightly inferior. Others include ethylene-modified maleic resin, water-based amino resin, and polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose, which generally contain -COOH (carboxyl group), -OH (hydroxyl group), -NH2 (amine group), etc. Hydrophilic genes, after a specific process, become completely soluble in water, and can be used as a binder for water-based inks. However, there are obviously some unsatisfactory areas, and the suitability for water-based ink printing, gloss, Water resistance and other effects are different (see Table 1)
Table 1 Types and Properties of Waterborne Resins
Water-based ink pigments are materials that give the color characteristics of the ink to meet the color requirements of the print. General organic and inorganic pigments can be used for water-based inks. Since water-based ink resins are mostly alkali-soluble, pigments that are resistant to basic conditions must be used when pigments are selected. However, the pigment density of inks is much greater than that of solvent-based inks, and the surface tension and polarity of water are all related to solvents. The large difference makes the pigment dispersion more difficult, affecting the stability, viscosity and pH of the ink. The use of surfactants to increase the affinity of the resin and water and the affinity of the pigment to the water-soluble binder solve the problem. In addition, the viscosity and PH value of the ink are needed to be precisely controlled. When the pH is higher than 9.5, the alkali is too strong, the viscosity of the ink will decrease, the drying speed will be slow, and the water resistance will be deteriorated; when the PH value is lower than 8 That is, the alkali is too weak, the viscosity of the ink will increase, the ink will be easy to dry, and it will cause defects such as dirty plate, paste plate, and foaming. The use of high-grade pigments made from domestic pigments with bright color, low viscosity, and stable system makes aqueous inks.
Water-based ink additives need to add various additives to improve the performance of water-based inks, while aqueous ink additives are more important than solvent-based inks. Commonly used water-based ink additives are as follows:
1 Defoamer: used to eliminate the foam in water-based inks, the amount is generally 1% to 2%. 2 Stabilizer: It mainly prevents ink from coalescence and mold during storage and transportation. It can reduce the viscosity of ink and adjust the PH value of ink. Generally, it uses ammonia or ethanol glue. 3 Others include dispersion, preservatives, leveling agents, slip agents, and cross-linking agents. By using these auxiliaries scientifically to send weaknesses in aqueous inks, the stability of aqueous inks can be improved.
Solvents for aqueous inks Solvents for aqueous inks must have; 1 dissolve the resin; 2 adjust the viscosity; 3 adjust the drying speed. In particular, water-based inks also require non-toxic properties, so its solvents are mainly pure water and a small amount of alcohols, such as water, butanol, isopropanol, etc. It can assist water in enhancing the ability to dissolve the resin and improve the dispersibility of pigments. Accelerate the penetration and suppress the foaming effect.
The preferred basic aqueous formula is as follows:

The second step is to formulate the ink: The standby colorant, auxiliary agent, and solvent (water) are mixed and stirred evenly. Through grinding and dispersing, they have sufficient fineness, luster and coloring power, and the filter package is an aqueous ink product.
In summary, we selected various types and varieties of water-soluble acrylic resins, selected pigments and auxiliaries through comparative tests, and formulated them with acrylic emulsions, added cross-linking agents, and optimized the formulation through orthogonal tests. The water-based ink products developed by the relevant units have been tested and used to prove that their indicators have reached the advanced level of similar products at home and abroad and have been well received by the users. Its main technical indicators are shown in Table 3.

In the flexo package printing, most of the current domestic and foreign use of water-based ink. Water-based inks are particularly suitable for cigarettes, wines, foods, beverages, medicines, children's toys and other sanitary packaging products. Since water-based inks do not contain volatile organic solvents, they not only reduce the residual toxicity on the surface of the printed matter, make printing equipment easy to clean, but also reduce the risk of fire and hidden dangers caused by static electricity and flammable solvents. Therefore, water-based inks are called A new type of "green" printed material.
