For many printing users, special gloss pigments are a relatively unfamiliar idea, but if talking about pearlescent pigments and pearlescent effects, people in the printing industry are much more familiar, such as the Merck series. The traditional "pearlescent pigment" is semantically very limited, and it is easy to mistakenly believe that the effect of this pigment is like a pearl: white, translucent, and elegant and soft. In fact, even the series has many changes, such as S grade (10 ~ 100μm) pigments, the particles are relatively coarse, and the texture is completely the same as the soft and shiny pearls. For example, the iron oxide pigments of the 300 and 500 series show that there is no metallic luster in the pearl. Therefore, the "special gloss pigment" is more accurate or representative for the products with such layered structure and using the principle of refraction / interference to express gloss. At present, in the domestic packaging field, the application of special gloss pigments is becoming more and more common, not only because of the unique gloss effect, but also because it is easy to use, flexible, more economical and environmentally friendly. For the packaging of most high-end consumer products, such as cigarettes, alcohol, sweets and cosmetics, it is more reasonable to use this decoration. The following is the author's new process of testing special gloss pigments in packaging and printing, for reference. 1. Sheet-fed gravure printing process It is customary for most users to use engraved gravure printing, because the particle size of the pigment is relatively large, and a large amount of ink transmission method is required to transfer a certain amount of pigment to the packaging material, so that the printing achieves the desired gloss effect . However, in paper production, the traditional gravure printing costs remain high, the main reasons are: First, the printing plate cylinder production costs are high; Second, the roll paper feeding method wastes a lot. On the other hand, the cost pressure of packaging customers is increasing, and the packaging style is changing rapidly, and there are more and more short-term jobs. In this way, printing companies have to adopt alternative methods, such as gravure printing on a sheet of paper is an effective solution. Sheet-fed gravure printing can be combined with offset printing. Unnecessary gravure printing can be done by offset printing, which greatly reduces the cost, and the paper waste is much smaller, but for special glossy pigments with large flakes, Intaglio can be used to form an effective ink layer thickness to achieve satisfactory results. Special gloss ink is used more as a base color in packaging design. Making a solid plate cylinder can cope with the use of different special gloss inks on multiple jobs, which saves a lot of expenses from the printing plate. Another advantage is that it can be used to make printed proofs, with little waste, and the effect is basically the same as the product. It is very effective for the pearlescent special gloss proofs and is more conducive to packaging customer communication. However, it should be noted that the printing speed and printing pressure of sheet-fed gravure printing are somewhat different from the traditional web gravure printing. Sometimes, the performance of the ink needs to be adjusted accordingly to ensure the effect. Second, offset printing online / offline polishing process If you do not use single-sheet gravure printing, another method that can be combined with offset printing to use special gloss effects is glazing. Glazing is also known as "over oil" or "overcoat". It is a kind of post-printing process in the traditional sense. It is used to protect the ink layer from being smudged and scratched, and to provide additional gloss. Said "glazing", in fact, "printing" using this process to transfer the special gloss ink, because the printing ink layer of offset printing is very thin, can not form a good gloss effect, so this is a "decorative glazing" ". According to the needs, this type of glazing can be arranged after other ink colors are printed, or it can be arranged before, as a primer. There are several glazing methods in packaging and printing. The author recommends the use of water-based or solvent-based glazing of a special glazing mechanism, rather than the use of the printing unit "offset varnish" in offset printing, which has too high a viscosity And the transferability of large particle pigments is poor. In recent years, glazing development equipment has adopted a "closed-blade" mechanism, using an anilox roller to transmit varnish through a rubber plate or photosensitive resin plate. In addition to saving the amount of varnish, the biggest advantage of this mechanism is that it can perform proficient local glazing and play a unique decorative effect. This is very important for the application of special glossy materials. In fact, it is also a flexographic printing unit. Here, the anilox roller has a great influence on the transferability of the pigment. The number of screen lines that are too thin cannot guarantee effective transfer, and too thick will cause drying problems. The old-fashioned "double-roller" mechanism can also be used for the construction of special gloss pigments, but it cannot be used for precise local glazing. If you use water-based glazing, you must pay attention to the drying problem. On the one hand, the water-based varnish dries relatively slowly. If you want to increase the printing speed, you must adjust the gloss parameters; After a long time, the plate roller must be cleaned carefully. Considering that customers will be used in different ink systems, different pearl pigments have been produced for water-based, solvent-based and curable properties, with the abbreviations W, S, and UV in the pigment names. The new offset press equipment introduced by Hubei Tongshan Shancheng Printing Machine Factory has multiple scraper-type "glazing" units, some in front of the offset printing group, and some in the end, in order to print decorative elements.
