A few days ago, the long-awaited second ocean drilling of the South China Sea, IODP 349, was officially sailed from Hong Kong. This voyage was suggested, designed and presided over by Chinese scientists. Professor Li Chunfeng from the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology at Tongji University and Professor Lin Jian from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute of the United States jointly served as the chief scientist of this voyage. Twelve Chinese scientists boarded the ship to participate in scientific drilling missions. The IODP 349 voyage is the first voyage of a new round of 10-year Ocean Scientific Drilling-"International Ocean Discovery Program" (October 2013 to October 2023), and the second implementation in the South China Sea after the ODP184 voyage in 1999 Ocean Scientific Drilling Voyage. The voyage was implemented with joint funding. The required funds were implemented in a 7: 3 ratio by China and the International Ocean Discovery Plan. It was executed by the US “Determination†deep-sea drilling vessel and is expected to be completed in 62 days. The mission of this scientific drilling voyage is the deep tectonic evolution of the South China Sea. It is planned to complete three boreholes in the deep sea basin with a depth of about 4,000 meters in the South China Sea. The total footage is about 4,000 meters. Process and characteristics, determine the exact age of the formation of the South China Sea, test various scientific hypotheses that triggered the expansion of the South China Sea, and analyze the corresponding geological tectonic movements. Ocean Scientific Drilling is the largest and longest-lasting large-scale international scientific and technological cooperation program in the field of earth sciences. It explores the most cutting-edge scientific problems in the world through core drilling and observation experiments in deep seabed drilling. China has successively participated in the Ocean Drilling Program (1998-2003), the Comprehensive Ocean Drilling Program (2003-2013) and the International Ocean Discovery Program (2013-2023), and is expected to rapidly improve China ’s deep-sea earth science research level by participating in the New Decade Program. Explore the mysteries of the ocean and make new contributions.
